What is Cable Management

As the datacenter grows in size and in the number of connected users and network/storage interfaces, the number of cables will increase as well. With the increase number of network, telephone, storage and power cables in the datacneter, it becomes a nightmare to keep track of them if this wasn’t done from the beginning. 

Datacenter operators don’t usually take this matter seriously until a troubleshooting or expansion is required. At that point, the one day project will require much more time to finish due to cabling mess. No one knows this server is connected to which switch interface and there isn’t enough interfaces on the switch to connect the new servers although some interfaces are not blinking green (as used) but we’re not sure if the connected device is teporarily turned off or decommissioned. 

In cases like that, cable management project is necessity. Imaging a datacenter where every single cables is labeled on both ends, telling you what device it belongs to and which interface it is connected to. imagine all these cables are colour coded and managed through conduit through the ceiling or under the ground of the datacenter. You don’t have to keep tracking the cable, you just read the label.
